Abstract

A wideband pattern-reconfigurable magneto-electric (ME) dipole antenna is presented. The pattern-reconfigurability on the E-plane is achieved by adopting high-order mode ME dipole, where the electric dipole component of the proposed ME dipole design is deliberately modified to be larger than half of the wavelength. The tunable length of the electric dipole is realized by dividing each dipole arm into three sections which are then connected in series with a number of PIN diodes. Through manipulating the On/Off states of the PIN diodes, the radiation pattern of the ME dipole can be switched between three different states. A wide effective impedance bandwidth (BW) is obtained and measured in terms of the overlapped frequency region for all radiation states in which the BW $(S_{11}\leq-10dB)$ are sustained simultaneously.
