Abstract

A novel leaky-wave antenna (LWA) with circular polarization (CP) and broadside radiation based on integrated substrate gap waveguide (ISGW) technology is proposed. A unique periodic structure, i.e. microstrip line with a periodic set of radiating stubs attached and series U-shape slot, is used to scan continuously from backward to forward and thus to form CP. The proposed LWA provides beam scanning from <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$-29^{\circ}$</tex> to <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$12^{\circ}$</tex> over the frequency range of 21.5-27.5 GHz. Return loss less than -10 dB, and axial ratio less than 3 dB are achieved in 21 - 27.5 GHz (26.8%), and 21.16 - 26.05 GHz (20.7%), respectively. The average radiation efficiency is 87.8%.
