Abstract
This paper is a description of the development of a washer for estimating axial force in bolted joints by measuring the plastic and elastic deformations of the micro-asperities on the contact surface of the washer and the elastic deformation of the washer itself. From the experimental results it was found that it is possible to design a washer for detecting an axial force with high sensitivity by adjusting the material and geometric profiles of micro-asperities on the washer surface
