Abstract

We propose an atom optical amplitude grating formed by a standing wave light field. The standing wave optically pumps all atoms except those localized near the nodes of the light field into an undetected internal state. The distribution of atoms near the nodes in the detected internal state can approach that of a minimum uncertainty wavepacket. The periodicity of the spatial localization results in a well resolved diffraction pattern. We also explore the spatial coherence of atomic wavepackets following the interaction with the virtual grating.
