Abstract

Serial rear-ended accidents often happen on freeways, and these accidents involve many vehicles and can cause serious consequences. In order to solve serial rear-end accidents on freeway, and improve the efficiency of the freeway, the authors proposed a vehicle risk prediction and driving-advice-making algorithm based on car group. In this paper, the authors proposed a concept of safety time (ST). With this concept, the authors could divide all the vehicles on freeway into different car groups. Vehicles in the same car group have relatively larger risks, and vehicles in different car groups have relatively smaller risks. In every car group, the authors calculated the collision risk of vehicles. According to the collision risk of vehicles, the safety and efficiency of car groups, the authors could make driving advice for every vehicle. The simulation result showed that this algorithm will improve the straight freeways’ safety and efficiency.
