Abstract

In this work the kinetics of continuous coarsening of deformation microstructures are analysed. The coarsening examples span a large range in structural scale and driving force, including subgrain growth in a deformed subgrain structure, uniform coarsening in a deformed lamellar structure, and grain growth in a deformed nanocrystalline structure. The unified coarsening model for deformation microstructures considers the change of the apparent activation energy during coarsening and successfully describes the kinetics in each of the given coarsening examples. It is also found that the increase in the apparent activation energy dominates the coarsening kinetics and leads to a significant decrease in the coarsening rate as coarsening proceeds.
