Abstract

We consider the design problem for multi-service networks where connections can be more complex than simply symmetrical bidirectional point-to-point connections. We define the notion of generalized connection which includes the cases of symmetrical and non-symmetrical point-to-point connections as well as point-to-multipoint and full multipoint connections. We provide a unified framework in which the optimal routing and dimensioning of networks with generalized connections can be discussed and solved. We obtain general formulas for the induced costs and the optimal routing in the case of simple load sharing. We then discuss extensions of the model to the selection of candidate sets, the generation of obviously good choices and the difficulties associated with alternate routing methods.
