Abstract

The introduction of a third electrode in a cold cathode gauge leads to a number of practical advantages. The characteristic change of mode, found with the conventional gauge may be eliminated; since the mode change leads to a discontinuity in the graph of ion current against pressure, this is a real merit. The sensitivity of the gauge may be changed and improved over a range of pressures which may be selected by adjustment of the voltage. In particular, the instrument may be used as a vacuum switch. In the cases which have been examined, the relative dimensions of the electrodes are important.
