Abstract

A consideration of the possible cation exchange reactions with clay‐mineral surfaces in aqueous media leads to an equilibrium expression with which it is possible to obtain a good correlation of data in the literature. Free‐energy considerations based on approximate equilibrium constants also support the theory. The ionic‐strength contribution of the various clay minerals is shown to be large enough to account for displacement of curves due to differences in clay‐water concentration.
