Abstract

Most of the problems in this field were sharply delineated1 in the “Symposium on Evaluation Tests for Stainless Steels,” held in 1949 by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Investigations on intergranular corrosion undertaken since then have resulted in information and new, rapid testing methods which have largely fulfilled the future needs as defined in the papers and discussions at that time. The purpose of the present paper is to outline a rational testing sequence for evaluating the susceptibility of various grades of stainless steels to rapid intergranular attack by means of a description of the essential characteristics and fields of application of presently available test methods in the light of recent research on intergranular corrosion.
