Abstract

Equations developed in Norway to predict average gradient (runout distance) from terrain parameters were tested against a sample of North American and Swiss avalanches. Average gradient, α, was predicted within ±2° for about 70% of the cases. Runout distances were generally underestimated for paths with a unique longitudinal profile. A new equation that can handle both the normal and the troublesome profiles was developed from the test data.
