Abstract

The identification of components in the essential oil of Cannabis sativa L. is accomplished by combining the information of molecular weight, functional group and retention index. The molecular weight of individual substances eluting from a capillary column is determined by negative ion chemical ionization. The reactant ion OH− produces [MH]− ions by proton abstraction. The RCOO unit present in esters is converted into the RCOO− ion by a nucleophilic attack by the OH− ion upon the ester function, which offers a simple identification of the acid part of an ester.
