Abstract

The relationships between five subspecies of kit foxes were examined by stepwise discriminant analysis of nine cranial measurements from 104 specimens. As a result the San Joaquin kit fox, V. m. mutica , is recognized as a distinct subspecies and three other subspecies, V. m. arsipus, V. m. devia , and V. m. tenuirostris , are synonymized with V. m. macrotis .
