Among North American Canidae, the kit fox, Vulpes wtacrotis, is the most narrowly specialized for existence on deserts of the western United States anid Mexico, where it has evolved several more or less recognizably distinct subspecies. The geographic range of V. nI. nevadensis Goldman includes most of the Great Basin where it is very closely identified with desert valleys formerly occupied by Pleistocene lakes such as Bonneville in Utah, Lahontan in Nevada (Fig. 1),
