Abstract

Field measurements of the sound insulation of over 1200 party walls and nearly 500 party floors have been made in dwellings built in the early 1970s. More than half the walls and over 60% of the floors were found to have a sound insulation performance below that specified as a deemed‐to‐satisfy requirement in the U.K. Building Regulations. A significant proportion of walls and floors had a very poor performance. In some cases this poor performance could be attributed to particular features in the design and construction of the dwelling. However even when results severely affected by such features are excluded there remains considerable variability between different examples of similar constructions. While it is possible to suggest reasons for this variability, it is not possible at present to account for the variability in a quantitative manner.
