Abstract

Radiographers, as health professionals, have a responsibility to recognize health promotion opportunities which may arise during their clinical practice. These opportunities include giving advice and information to patients, protecting patients, staff and members of the general public from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation and adopting good practices to minimize the spread of infection. Tannahill's model of health promotion, using the three domains of health education, health protection and disease prevention, was used during previous research to establish nine key areas in which health promotion opportunities could be developed. The aim of this survey was to ascertain the views of radiography educators in the UK in relation to relevance, clarity of role and potential for further development in clinical practice in these key areas. Results were generally positive and provide an argument for encouraging health promotion activities to become an integral part of radiography practice. In order for this to succeed, it will be necessary to provide appropriate education and training, raise awareness, stimulate reflection and encourage radiographers to develop informed action plans to translate health promotion theory into clinical practice.
