Abstract

I suppose I saw thousands of plants of the maidenhair spleenwort, Asplenium trichomanes L., the rue spleenwort, Asplenium ruta-muraria L., Ceterach officinarum DC. and Polypodium vulgare L. The first two were the most plenteous. These four were growing abundantly on the walls lining the roads, and occasionally around walls surrounding barnyards, etc. The English walls of course differ from those on this side of the Atlantic
