Abstract
Dendrobium is the most popular orchid in Thailand according to its economic value. In order to increase the volume of sales, new hybrids need to be releasedat all time. Thus seed germination and propagation are very important steps to obtain the new cultivars from orchid breeders. An experiment compared 5 different seed sowing media: Hyponex (H), Knudson C (KC), Vacin and Went (VW), Murashige and Skoog (MS) and ¼MS on seed germination and development of two Dendrobium hybrids. Seeds of D. antennatum A D. phalaenopsis and D. Louis Bleriot had highest germination percentage of 95 and 85%, respectively, on Hyponex medium. Moreover, two months after seed sowing, protocorms of both Dendrobium hybrids were highly developed on Hyponex medium as measured by protocorm diameter and fresh weight, compared to the other sowing media. Hyponex medium is the most effective medium for seed germination and development in these two Dendrobium hybrids.
