A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of a Planned Teaching Programme on Care of the Patient on Ventilator in terms of Knowledge and Practice among Staff Nurses Working in ICUs of the Selected Government Medical College attached Hospitals of Gujarat State

Abstract

This study was aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of staff nurses before and after administration of a planned teaching program on care of the patient on ventilator in intensive care units (ICUs) of the selected government medical college attached hospital of Gujarat state. A quasi-experimental study approach was used with one group pre-test–post-test design conducted in ICUs of the selected government medical college attached hospitals of Gujarat state. The investigator used purposive method for selection of the ICUs and the staff nurses. In view of the nature of the problem and accomplishment of the objectives of the study, a planned teaching program on care of the patient on ventilator was prepared for staff nurses, structured knowledge questionnaire and observational checklist were developed to assess the knowledge and practice of the staff nurses. Data was collected in the month of November and December 2011. Majority of the samples were from 31 to 40 years of age, female, having GNM qualification, 6–10 years of clinical experience and ICU experience. The mean pre-test knowledge score was 12.32 and the mean post-test knowledge score was 24.25 with mean difference of 11.93, also the calculated ‘t’ value (23) was greater than the tabulated ‘t’ value (1.68) at 0.05 level significance. The mean pre-test practice score was 23.22 and mean post-test practice score was 35.35 with mean difference of 12.1. and the calculated ‘t’ (36.26) was greater than tabulated ‘t’ (1.68), null hypothesis was rejected and research hypothesis was accepted, it was statistically proved and revealed that a planned teaching program on care of the patient on ventilator was effective in terms of knowledge and practice among the staff nurses.
