Abstract

The recent awakening of environmental consciousness and resulting environmental regulations along with unsustainable use of synthetic products have led to the search for a viable eco-friendly alternative. Natural fibers have been found to be the perfect substitute aimed towards sustainability. Various natural fibers are now being used as reinforcement in composites. Their unique set of properties combined with their renewability and availability has made them much popular. Natural fibers are biodegradable, which is a standout property of its composites. Natural fibers are easily available and the fibers can be separated at lower economic rates. The handling of natural fibers is easy compared with other synthetic fibers. Plant fibers are lingo cellulosic fibers having hemicelluloses, pectin, waxes, lignin and cellulose. Natural fibers are used in various forms, such as randomly oriented, continuous etc. Lemon grass can be used as a replacement in the non-wooden industry. In research, it is observed that lemongrass has lower content of lignin and higher cellulose percentage. The thermal behaviour and the surface features and functionality of the fiber were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Due to the fibers hydrogen bonding, the structure of fiber is strong. This paper addresses the various mechanical properties and latest potential applications of the vetiver fiber and lemongrass fiber in different commercial industries for the advancement of eco-friendly products.
