Abstract

The English department of early commercial press employed a great number of renowned Chinese English experts and established a first rate English compiling staff in China. Represented by Kuang Fuzhuo, Zhou Yueran and Ping Hainan, the English compiling staffs were related to each other by kinship, academic study or place of birth. They compiled English textbooks, issued English journals and launched English correspondence school, hence greatly contributing to the development of early English education in modern China.
