A Study on the Correlation between Yield and Substratum in the Cultivation of Oyster Mushroom

Abstract

Edible mushrooms are well known for their nutritional and medicinal properties; hence cultivation of mushroom is considered as a profitable business rather than a hobby. The profitability lies in the proper choice of; variety to be cultivated, substrate on which cultivation is made and proper management practices. The present study was focused to evaluate the growth and yield of ‘Pleurotus ostreatus’ on different substrates like paddy straw, Banana leaf, coir pith and saw dust. The cultivation was done in classical method. The temperature and humidity was monitored throughout the period of cultivation. The study revealed that, Banana leaf, paddy straw, and saw dust are ideal mediums for production of oyster mushroom. Coir pith was found to be the most improper medium for bed preparation, which prevented formation of primodials of ‘Pleurotus’. Among the fruit bodies formed on the coir pith, only a few survived, rest of them were seen as fallen on the ground, without any noticeable disturbance to the bed. Thus the yield was very poor.
