Abstract

HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station), which is a stratosphere-based (around 20km altitude) platform, offers cellular communication service that directly links existing cellular phones. HAPS is also a promising system for service area expansion as well as reliable communication methods after various natural disasters. A HAPS communication system with multiple cells is composed of the service links that provide communications between HAPS and land cellular phones and a feeder link that establishes communications between HAPS and a base station (Gateway). The communication capacity of the service links is determined by the communication capacity of the feeder link, which is equivalent to the sum of each cell's service link frequency bandwidth. Therefore, efficient spectrum usage of the feeder link is indispensable. In this paper, we propose a “Multi-Gateway System” for efficient spectrum utilization. Multi-Gateways set on the land transmit and receive different feeder link signals at the same frequency. The proposed system improves the spectrum utilization by increasing the number of Gateways while eliminating the interference among feeder links.
