Abstract

With an ever-increasing importance of wind power generation in power systems, the necessity of choosing the appropriate type of technology for the wind turbine generators becomes more significant. In the current paper, fixed and variable speed wind turbines and the application of energy storage system (ESS) to smoothen the wind farm output power are studied. A detailed analysis of the influence of equipping the fixed speed induction generators (FSIG) with an energy storage system on the power system's transient stability is presented. Further, a comparison is made between the wind farm with variable speed induction generators (DFIG) and wind farm with ESS-equipped FSIG to suggest the better choice of generator for the wind farm from power system transient stability point of view. The simulations are performed using PSCAD software, with a 9 bus system. It is suggested that ESS-equipped FSIG wind turbine has a better transient performance than DFIG wind turbine and would be the better choice in wind farms.
