Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore perception of English noun countability among Korean EFL undergraduates (n = 433). The study also made an attempt to find out whether Korean as L1 affects the participants’ judgement of countability of English nouns. Divided into three groups according to their English proficiency levels, the participants were guided to complete a questionnaire designed to investigate their perception of the countability of Korean and English nouns. The data analysis of this study with the SPSS revealed some interesting findings as follows: 1) The participants recognized differences in countability between Korean and English nouns. 2) As for the congruity of the countability between Korean and English nouns, it seemed that they could easily understand the English noun countability. 3) In regard to the incongruity, it is probable that they had difficulty understanding the English noun countability. 4) Pertaining to the congruity, the participants, regardless of their English proficiency levels, showed a high degree of understanding the English noun countability while achieving a low degree of understanding the English noun countability concerning the incongruity.
