A Study on Native Place Names Recognized as Chinese Character Place Names―Focus on the Village Names in Boeun Area―

Abstract

이 글은 주민들이 한자 지명으로 인식하는 마을 이름을 대상으로 이들 지명이 한자 지명이 아니라 고유어 지명임을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 자연적으로 발생하는 지명은 대체로 고유어 지명이 많다. 그러나 세월이 흐르면서 지명의 형태가 변화하면서 원래 형태에서 알 수 있던 의미 유연성이 낮아지게 된다. 그래서 어원을 잘 모르게 되자, 어원을 새롭게 해석하는 과정에서 변화된 형태와 음상이나 의미가 비슷한 한자를 가지고 설명하려는 경우가 있다. 또한 예전에 우리말 표기를 위하여 한자를 빌려서 표기한 차자 표기 지명을 한자어 지명으로 오해하는 경우도 있다. 이 글에서는 이러한 지명이 한자 지명이 아니라 고유어 지명임을 밝히고, 그 지명의 의미를 설명하였다.This study aims to disclose town names that residents recognize as Chinese character place names are actually Korean native place names. The primitive form of place names is supposed to be in Korean native words. But as time passes, the form of place names changes, and the flexibility of meaning that could be recognized from the original form falls. As the origin became unclear, in the process of interpreting the origin in a new way, there are cases of explaining it with Chinese characters that are similar to the changed form and sound image. Also, there are cases where place names written by Chinese-borrowing writing system are mistaken as Chinese character place names. This study disclosed that such names are Korean native place names, not Chinese character place names, and explained the meaning of the place names.
