Abstract
A new IP optical network architecture called multilayer service network architecture that is intended to reduce network cost drastically and to introduce IP optical technologies easily into the existing IP backbone networks is proposed. The multilayer service network has two key technologies, the multilayer path-through method that can eliminate IP layer processing at the optical edge node and the routing cooperation functions that achieve routing stability and easiness of introduction. And we also propose the extensions to BGP for the internal routes exchange protocol that can carry not only an IP prefix but also a path ID of the optical path corresponding to the IP prefix.
