Abstract

The electric propulsion ship has been considered an alternative for stricter environmental regulations and safety issues. As electric propulsion ships have been developed, the attention given to a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has also grown for green and efficient power supply. However, a BESS-installed ship is still regarded as a non-preferred power source in terms of reliability and cost-competitiveness. In this regard, this paper shows the possibility of a BESS-installed ship. Two major drawbacks of applying the BESS as a ship's power source are mentioned, and possible solutions are suggested and reviewed. These introduced solutions could contribute extending the applicability of a BESS and boosting its realistic utilization in the marine industry.
