Abstract

The fundamental natural frequency of a cast-steel component has been measured by striking it with an impact hammer and analyzing the vibration response through a microphone and FFT analyzer. The variation in the first natural frequency due to the presence of porosity and inclusions in the casting has been measured and a correlation between it and the defect level established. The technique described is well suited for adoption in quality-control procedures.
