Abstract

Abstract This paper is a continuation of one presented by the authors at the Pittsburgh Meeting of the A.S.M.E. in 1928, and deals with the mechanism of wiping of babbitt linings, with certain phenomena observed during the casting of tin-base alloys, and with the effects of cold work on them. It is shown that wiping of babbitts is a result of the upper layer of the lining’s reaching the solidus temperature, when the constituent with the lowest melting temperature liquefies, the babbitt becomes “mushy,” and is therefore wiped by the journal. The appearance of the castings of various chemical composition is discussed, and the variation in hardness and microstructure due to cold work is given.
