Abstract

We have obtained and studied a stable low-field (approximately 10 5 V cm −1) electron emission from diamond-like a-C and i-C films deposited onto Ni and W tips and onto flat Si, Ni and Cr substrates. The films 10 to 500 nm thick were fabricated in an r.f. discharge (CH 4 + H 2 mixture, 13.56 MHz). The Fowler-Nordheim plots of the emission current from the films represent broken lines and are similar in shape to the emission characteristics of other semiconducting films such as ZnS, NiO and SiO 2 also examined in this work.
