Martin, P. G. ; Angel, J. R. P. Abstract If the diffuse interstellar features originate in grains which cause the observed interstellar polarization, or in smaller grains similarly aligned, then polarization struqture is predicted at the features, of amplitude p l.4p ATIT, where p is the polarization in the nearby continuum and ATIT is the fractional change in optical depth. Observations of the AA4430 and 5780 features in HD 183143 reveal no changes in polarization at this predicted level. Host grains which are relatively poorly aligned and probably rather small are consistent with this result and the other properties of the diffuse features, though now alternative, nongrain origins may appear more attractive.
