Abstract

Abstract This study concerns a novel type of polymer dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystal film (Polymer/FLC composite film). An investigation of the relationships between the physical properties of materials and electro‐optic properties of composite films has been undertaken. Results show that the composite films exhibit an electro‐optic response time in the order of several hundreds microseconds (μs), and the best contrast ratio is about 13:1. In addition, we found that the viscosity of perpolymer should not be too high, the refractive index of polymer should be suitable for obtaining higher transmission, and the dispersed shape of the FLC droplets should be long‐elliptical networks. Better electro‐optic properties can be obtained if these conditions are followed.
