Abstract
The wear rate of an iron disc in lubricated contact with an iron pin on a pin-on-disc wear tester was measured using thin layer activation. The ratio of disc wear to pin wear was shown to be lower than that predicted on the basis of equal volumetric wear and, under one set of conditions, to have systematic correlations with the conditions of load and sliding speed. A temperature-dependent mechanism is proposed to explain the phenomena observed.
