Abstract

Network congestion is one of the challenging issues of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). These systems are expected to be the backbone of future road safety which requires good communication network performances that can answer latency and reliability constraints. As a countermeasure technique against congestion, European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) defined a mandatory component of ITS stations known as Decentralized Congestion Control (DCC) mechanism in ITS-G5 standardization. In this paper, we discuss congestion control mechanisms that aim to enhance vehicular network dissemination performances. We propose a first approach based on data rate adaptation and then we present a method based on combining data rate and message rate adaptations DRC/ATCL (Data Rate Control with Adaptive Traffic Control based on LIMERIC). For this purpose, we develop a formulation of Channel Busy Ratio (CBR) related to transmission probability and application reliability. Based on realistic simulations, our findings show that DRC/ATCL technique outperforms other discussed mechanisms in terms of end-to-end delay and packet error rate.
