Abstract

AbstractThe doping effect of trivalent cerium ion on polydispersed AgBr(I) emulsion microcrystals has been investigated. The Ce(NO3)3 is added to the halide-gelatin solution to make five emulsions with different amounts of Ce3+. It has been found that the Ce3+ ions restrain the growth of the grains. The effect of Ce3+ doping on ionic conductivity is very small but it significantly decreases the lifetime of photoelectrons in emulsion microcrystals. The increase of photographic sensitivity of the emulsions with Ce3+ dopants is very remarkable. The correlation between photographic sensitivity and electrical properties implies that Ce3+ dopants form deeper electron traps which aids the formation of latent image centres with high activity and low dispersity.
