Abstract

This paper describes a general mathematical model (mainly stochastic, in nature), for the basic operational structure of a multiprogrammed computer system. The model considered depends, on the one hand, on the job-flow and, on the other, upon the hardware configuration and operating system of the computer. A formal description is presented to illustrate the most important activities, in the language SIMULA 67. Using this model it is possible to give an exact form to the statistical problems of job mixing and to the non linear stochastic control problems of priorities and page fault problems.
