Abstract
Damage to DNA (the genetic material in our cells) appears to be the most likely cause of most cancer and genetic birth defects, and may contribute to heart disease and ageing as well. These are the major diseases now confronting our society: currently almost one-fourth of us will develop cancer, while 5–10% of our children are born with birth defects.
