Abstract
The potential fluctuation during passive film breakdown and repair of iron can be broken down into the four fundamental steps: (1) pit nucleation, (2) pit growth, (3) growth termination and (4) repassivation. The stochastic or kinetic nature of these steps was analysed with the help of a simple electrochemical model. Thus, the potential fluctuation could be fully simulated numerically once the parameters relevant to these four steps are experimentally determined.
