Abstract

The structural color of 1D photonic crystals modified with silver nanoparticles is a function of the silver-loading state, which translates into an optically encoded silver-release profile. Owing to their distinct silver-uptake properties, clay–TiO2 Bragg stacks (see image) thus show potential for the detection of antimicrobial activity based on a label-free optical read-out system.
