Abstract

This paper examines the temporal interpretation of Korean relative clauses which are realized with the expression -nu, and their incompatibility with stative predicates. I analyze -nu as a kind of stativizing operator which lexically encodes the imperfective meaning. I account for the distributional restriction and the temporal interpretation in terms of the semantic function of-nu and independently motivated discourse principle about the reference time update.
