Abstract

The low energy fission cross sections of 233U, 235U, and 241Pu have been compared to simulated cross sections in order to determine values for the mean level spacing and mean level width which are not biased by failure to observe the numerous weak levels. We have obtained the following values for the mean level spacing and the ratio of mean level width to mean level spacing for both spin states: 233U, D = 0.55 ± 0.06 eV, 〈Γ〉 D = 1.31 ± 0.23 ; 235U, D = 0.38 ± 0.04 eV, 〈Γ〉 D = 0.58 ± 0.11 ; and 241Pu, D = 0.89 ± 0.09 eV, 〈Γ〉 D = 0.56 ± 0.11 . We have also obtained 3.5 ± 1 3 for the ratio of total number of open fission channels for the 3 − to the 4 − states of 235U in the energy range 1.6–59 eV.
