Abstract

A lumped transmission line model is deduced and investigated in this paper. The model is based on least-squares fitting of orthogonal polynomials which are space dependent and have time dependent coefficients. The model enables the line voltage and current to be approximately determined for arbitrary points along the line at arbitrary times. The model is restricted neither to lossless lines nor to single-phase systems, nor to the sinusoidal steady state. An example is given to show how the transmission line model can be extended to include almost any linear terminal dynamics. Some simulation results from an extreme situation in a multiphase system are presented, which show the usefulness of the model as a tool in transient simulation studies.
