Abstract
This article looks at a technique for sampling sewage to provide evidence of drug use. Scientists have developed methods for isolating the by-products of drugs excreted in urine. Scientists in Italy examined the Po River on different days in different months looking for benzoylecgonine which is the waste product of cocaine. Liquid chromatography has been used with similar success and researchers say this will allow them assess the drug use of a community. INSET: Sewage Standards.
