Abstract
The magnetic phase diagram of Gd-Y displays a helical antiferromagnetic phase and two ferromagnetic phases. For the concentration Gd0.696Y0.304, the alloy orders at 215 K into the Ferro-I phase, which exhibitx a net c-axis moment. At approximately 205 K, there is a transition to a helical antiferromagnetic (HAF) structure, which persistis until 186 K when there is a further transition to the secong ferromagnetic structure. The structure of the Ferro-I phase remains the subject of debate despite extensive experimental effort. We report longitudinal muon spin relaxation measurements on an ab-plane sample of Gd0.696Y0.304. Our data are complementary to our neutron scattering data, and have improved our understanding of the paramagnetic to Ferro-I phase transition.
