Abstract

Consider a coastal aquifer system with an unconfined aquifer, a leaky aquifer, and an aquitard between them. An new analytical solution is developed to investigate the effects of tidal fluctuations and leakage on the groundwater head of leaky confined aquifer extending a finite distance under the sea. The tidal fluctuations in both unconfined and leaky aquifers are considered. The leakage of the offshore aquitard, which may be formed by sedimentary depositional process of the offshore current, is assumed different from that of the inland aquitard. All the existing solutions regarding the investigation on the head distribution for a leaky confined aquifer may be regarded as special cases of our solution. Based on this newly derived solution, we will investigate the dynamic effects between the leaky and unconfined aquifers in response to the tide. In addition, some hypothetical cases will be used to explore the influences of offshore and inland leakages on the tidal fluctuation in a leaky aquifer.
