Abstract

The criminal justice system is at the crossroads of a major policy choice-to continue the Progressive tradition of indeterminate sentencing as a rehabilitative mechanism, or to emphasize punishment through determinate sentencing. Social work services on behalf of defendants that affect individual sentencing decisions have the potential to improve the operation of the Progressive rehabilitative model and help stem the movement toward a punishment focus. A case study is presented. Criteria for case selection, collaborative relationships, role conflicts, and the unique skills and knowledge of social work practitioners are examined.
