Abstract

Described are two new species of chiggers from birds, Blankaartia amersoni, intraoral, holotype off Sterna fuscata; and Guntherana domrowi, holotype off Arenaria interpres. New host and locality records are given for Schoengastia philipi Womersley and Kohls and Womersia strandtmanni Wharton. Supplementary to ornithological studies of several islands in the North Central Pacific, Mr. A. Binion Amerson, Jr.,1 Smithsonian Institution, collected and submitted for identification 12 lots of chiggers from four species of marine birds and a lizard (skink). Although the collection is small, several firsts have been established. The four species of chiggers found, of which two are new, constitute the first records of trombiculid mites on the islands involved. These are Grass Island, Pearl and Hermes Reef, 27046' N, 175054' W, Lisianski Island, 2604' N, 173058' W, Sand Island of the Johnston Atoll, 16045' N, 169030' W, and Baker Island, 0?12' N, 176029' W. The chigger-host associations in all instances are first records, and the ecologic niche of the host occupied by Blankaartia amersoni sp. n. provides the first record of intraoral chiggers in birds. Blankaartia amersoni sp. n.
