Abstract
ABSTRACT A survey of Oregon sheep producers indicated that lambing losses by sheep growers in winter rainfall areas currently averages 16%. The majority of lambs born in these areas are born in pastures without the benefit of shelter. The utilization of wooden slatted floor portable shelters by lambing ewes was evaluated. The study measured occupancy rates of two shelters under free-choice, winter rainfall pasture conditions. The averages of daily maximum sheltering percentages for ewes and lambs were 31.2 and 50.7%, respectively, for the study. The highest sheltering rate during any one night throughout the study was 48% for ewes and 81.5% for lambs.
