Abstract

The measurement of the K I stress intensity factor by using a metallic foil strain gage is studied experimentally. The equation for calculating K I is derived from the Williams stress asymptotic expansion. The possible error caused by strain gradients across the gage length is minimized by an integration in the K I calculation. The method was demonstrated with the experiments on 7075-T6 and 6061-T6 aluminum alloys. Comparison is made between results obtained from Dally and Sanford's single strain gage method and the proposed method. It is shown that, in the case of a through-plate crack, the proposed single strain gage method can measure the K I with adequate accuracy.
